Appraising Art for Insurance Replacement Value, Charitable Contribution, Estate Settlement And Re-Sale

As an art appraiser I investigate paintings, sculptures and works on paper to determine their market value by identifying the creators and the quality of the art objects. I pay close attention the artwork's color values, brushstrokes, lines and engravings to unravel the mystery behind submitted works. My name is Linda Atkinson and I began appraising art while gallery director at Roanoke College; there I appraised  well over 200 peices of art in the college's Permanent Collection for insurance purposes.

How It works

Preparation

You would first put together as much information as you can on the artwork – are there any receipts, has it been insured before? Has it been in your family home forever and has a particular story? Do you know who bought it or when? Any family stories about the artwork could be useful. Have you done any research on the artwork yourself?

Examine

From there I examine it for condition, photograph it with details of the signature or any markings, measure it, and determine the media or how it was made. This can be harder than you think, if the work is under glass it is sometimes very hard to tell if it is an original painting or a print.

Investigate

The Appraisals I do are based on market research. This involves consulting auction records, private sales records, artworks currently for sale, and more to find comparable objects to the object being appraised.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, I will inspect the items, tell you a little about the works, and give an auction evaluation. I offer remote evaluations and will work with you in regard to scheduling and appointments.I look forward to hearing from you and how I can best assist you and your clients with their Fine Art Appraisals.
